Buying Skincare Abroad or Online: A Freshness Checklist

Read the actual label first. A production estimate cannot establish expiry, storage history or authenticity.
Before ordering: ask for the actual unit
Ask the seller for clear pictures of the item’s batch field, printed EXP/MFG, PAO and seals, and confirm the return conditions. A stock photo or a barcode alone does not identify the production lot. Use the brand’s authorised-seller information when choosing a seller.
On arrival: read three separate fields
- Record the full printed expiry first. Do not turn an unlabelled number into a date.
- Select the exact brand before checking a lot. Keep all characters and treat the result as an estimate. A decade-ambiguous code needs purchase and packaging context.
- When you first open it, record that day and read the product’s own PAO. The receipt date is not necessarily the opening date.
When the dates do not resolve the decision
A code does not reveal heat exposure or whether a seal was opened. If the printed date conflicts with a decoded estimate, retain photos and ask the brand or seller to clarify. Avoid using an item with unexplained damage or a changed smell, colour or texture while the issue is unresolved.
Sunscreens sold as OTC drugs in the US follow drug expiry requirements; do not extend a printed expiry because a batch estimate looks recent. For an unresolved lot, send the brand the exact product, market, lot, label photographs and purchase date; do not ask a checker to certify authenticity.
