What’s Inside Luxury Face Creams: The 20 Most Used Ingredients

What do creams from Chanel, La Mer, La Prairie and other luxury houses actually contain? We counted the ingredient lists the brands publish, and compared them with the other creams on this site.

Based on 36 luxury creams and 32 other creams with brand-published ingredient lists on this site · data as of 22 October 2026

In short
  • The most used ingredients are basics: 19 of the top 20 also appear in at least 30% of the other creams.
  • Luxury creams are more often fragranced: 94% list fragrance or essential oils (other creams 78%), and 78% list fragrance allergens that EU law requires on the label (53%).
  • Their lists are longer: 59 ingredients on average, against 41.

What we counted

  • Luxury brands (17): Chanel, Dior, Guerlain, La Mer, La Prairie, Clé de Peau Beauté, Sisley, Valmont, Chantecaille, Augustinus Bader, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Natura Bissé, Sulwhasoo, AMOREPACIFIC, Decorté, SENSAI, SK-II
  • Only the “moisturiser” shelf (creams and lotions), and only products whose full list the brand publishes. Eye creams, serums and oils are not included.
  • An ingredient counts once per product; “may contain” shade lists are left out. Water is in every cream, so it is not ranked.
  • The numbers update automatically whenever we add products.

How to read this

  • Common does not mean effective. Most top ingredients are moisturisers, texture agents and preservatives that almost every cream needs.
  • Signature complexes (a brand’s named “secret” ingredient) are split into several raw materials on the label, so they never show up as a single line here.
  • Ingredients below about 1% can be listed in any order, so rank on a label says little at the end of the list.
  • This is the catalogue of this site, not a random sample of every cream on the market. Price cannot be explained by the ingredient list alone.

Questions

Are luxury and everyday creams really that similar?

For the bulk of the formula, largely yes: 19 of the 20 most used ingredients in luxury creams also appear in at least 30% of the other creams on this site. The differences show up in fragrance, some specific peptides and oils, and longer lists.

I react to fragrance. What should I check?

In this count 94% of luxury creams list fragrance or essential oils, against 78% of the others. Each product page shows the fragrance and the labelled fragrance allergens under “Watch-outs”, so you can check a cream before buying.

Will these numbers change?

Yes. They are counted live from the products on this site, and we add new products every week.
