Zinc oxide (mineral sunscreen): what it does and how to use it
Zinc oxide is a mineral UV filter that blocks both UVA and UVB. In 2019 the US FDA proposed it and titanium dioxide as the only two sunscreen ingredients generally recognised as safe and effective.
What it does
- Covers a broad UV range on its own.
- Titanium dioxide is strongest against UVB; the two are often combined.
Strength and rules
- The FDA proposal covers zinc oxide and titanium dioxide at up to 25%.
- In the same proposal, the FDA asked for more data on 12 chemical filters, including avobenzone, octocrylene and oxybenzone.
How to use it
- Apply generously as the last morning step and reapply every two hours outdoors.
- Tinted versions hide the white cast.
Who should be careful
- Very gentle; a good choice for sensitive skin and children.
- Avoid inhaling spray or powder forms.
