Urea: what it does and how to use it
Urea is part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor. At low levels it hydrates; at higher levels it softens rough, thick skin.
What it does
- Draws water into the surface layer.
- At higher strengths, loosens built-up dead skin on heels, elbows and rough patches.
Strength and rules
- Face and body moisturizers commonly use up to 10%; foot creams for calluses often use 20% or more.
How to use it
- Use high-strength products only on rough areas, not on the face.
Who should be careful
- Can sting on cracked or broken skin.
